Now in 2011, DuffleBag is going to be busier than ever! In the next month we’re travelling from Northern Ontario to New York State.  Once again, in late February, we’ll be working with Orchestra London for a special series of co-performances, this time showcasing The Three Musketeers! And we already have our tentative plans to return to the West Coast and Southeast Asia.  The year’s looking pretty bright indeed…

Marcus, Rod, Natalie and Lee have spent a silly amount of time sitting  in planes and airports to bring “Beauty and the Beast” to audiences in both Singapore and Vietnam. Now that we’re here, we’re very happy to stretch our legs, do some shows, and squeeze in some sight-seeing!

Thanks to our friends at Act 3 International in Singapore, we’re able to come back for our fourth tour to this part of the world. Our previous trips, which also included stints in Brunei and Malaysia, were in 2000, 2005, and 2007.

Vietnam was exciting new ground for us and we enjoyed doing two shows at the ACG International School in Ho Chi Minh City. Our audiences responded very well, and we hope we did Canada proud! We managed to see some of this very colourful city before we left, including the Ben Thanh Market and the Cu Chi tunnels. We’ll get some pictures up soon…

Once in Singapore, we were welcomed by old friends Ruby and Lillian from Act 3, and set up in their theatre on Cairnhill Road, a very nice black-box style space to call home for two weeks. No setting up and tearing down is luxury!

After setting up, we had some media interviews.  We spoke on TV with PrimeTime Morning on ChannelNews Asia, which can be seen here (scroll down and click on “Child’s Play”). Next was radio, with Stanley and Pamela  on 938Live‘s “The Living Room”. (There’s a podcast here, under ‘Sept. 27, Part 1′,  but I don’t know how long it will stay up). Both were a lot of fun.

We’ve been doing two shows a day, to school audiences during the week and family crowds on the weekends (and Children’s Day, which was a holiday for kids last Friday). In the meantime we’ve also had a lot of great food! Singapore has so many different cultures present– Chinese, Malay, Indian, Korean, European, etc.– that you can pretty much find whatever you want. Even McDonald’s!

We’ve also gone to see a few things… but I can’t tell you everything all at once.

We’re really excited to present our fresh-out-of-the-wrapper website, just in time for our 2010-2011 season. We’ll be working on it over the next little while to put a lot of fun stuff for you to see, so please check back for frequent updates.

DuffleBag has an action-packed, super-busy year ahead. Over the next several months, we’ll be performing across Canada, from British Columbia to the Maritimes, spending some time in the United States, and even journeying over to Southeast Asia!  We’re going to share our experiences with you here as we travel with our shows, maybe even to a school or theatre near you…
